A Comprehensive Manual of Abhidhamma: The Abhidhammattha Sangaha of Ācariya Anuruddha

The work is organized into nine principal chapters corresponding to the structure of the Abhidhammattha Saṅgaha. Chapter I, “Compendium of Consciousness,” classifies consciousness into sense-sphere, fine-material-sphere, immaterial-sphere, and supramundane types, including the traditional schemes of 89 and 121 cittas. Chapter II, “Compendium of Mental Factors,” explains the 52 cetasikas, including ethically variable, unwholesome, and beautiful mental factors, together with their association and combination with consciousness. Chapter III, “Compendium of the Miscellaneous,” analyzes feeling, roots, functions, doors, objects, and bases. Chapter IV studies the cognitive process, including five-door and mind-door processes, javana, absorption, and object presentation. Chapter V examines process-freed phenomena, including planes of existence, rebirth-linking, kamma, death, and rebirth. Chapter VI presents matter, the 28 material phenomena, their origins, groupings, occurrence, and relation to nibbāna. Chapter VII surveys doctrinal categories such as defilements, aggregates, sense bases, elements, truths, and requisites of enlightenment. Chapter VIII explains conditionality through dependent arising and the twenty-four conditional relations. Chapter IX treats meditation subjects, calm, insight, purification, emancipation, noble individuals, attainments, and the culmination of the path.
