The book is organized into six major chapters. The second chapter, “What is Hinduism?” defines Hinduism through the customs and usages actually practiced by Hindu communities, rather than through ancient texts alone. The third chapter, “Who Are the Hindus?” examines the social and cultural boundaries of Hindu identity. The fourth chapter, “The Hindu Family,” studies family structure as a key institution of Hindu society. The fifth chapter, “The Growth of an Indian Nation,” links Hindu social development with broader questions of Indian national formation. The final chapter, “A Reply to My Critics, or What is Hindu Religion?” responds to objections and further clarifies the author’s position on Hindu religion, society, and reform.
