Introduction
Chapter 1, “The Enigma,” introduces the central question of Kuan Yin’s nature: whether she is merely symbolic, a popular goddess, or a profound Mahāyāna embodiment of compassion. Chapter 2, “Some Manifestations,” describes devotional encounters, temple worship, festivals, visions, and the ways ordinary devotees experience Kuan Yin’s compassionate presence. Chapter 3, “Kuan Yin’s Indian and Tibetan Genesis,” traces her doctrinal background through Avalokiteśvara and Tārā, explaining how Indian and Tibetan forms of compassion were transformed into the Chinese image of Kuan Yin. Chapter 4, “Miao Shan and Other Legends,” presents legendary narratives that shaped Kuan Yin’s Chinese identity, especially the figure of the compassionate princess. Chapter 5, “Some Buddhist Concepts of Kuan Yin,” moves from legend to doctrine, explaining Kuan Yin through Mahāyāna metaphysics, Mind, Bodhi, wisdom, and compassion. Chapter 6, “Sacred Rites,” introduces devotional practices, invocations, mantras, offerings, and ritual approaches associated with Kuan Yin. Chapter 7, “Contemplative Yogic Meditation,” focuses on meditative visualization and inner practice, showing how Kuan Yin becomes not only an object of worship but also a contemplative gateway to compassion. Chapter 8, “Dreams, Reveries and Speculations,” gathers visionary, reflective, and speculative dimensions of the author’s engagement with Kuan Yin.
