Introduction
The work sets out the bodhisattva path through a highly structured doctrinal framework. It begins with the foundational basis of the bodhisattva, including lineage, the arising of the thought of enlightenment, the bodhisattva’s aims, causes, fruits, qualities, and understanding of reality. It then develops the central practices of the path, especially the perfections of giving, morality, patience, energy, meditation, and wisdom, together with skilful means, vows, strength, knowledge, worship, reliance on spiritual friends, compassion, and the cultivation of wholesome states. Further sections analyze the bodhisattva’s conduct in relation to self-benefit and benefit for others, including pleasant speech, meaningful action, generosity, ethical discipline, instruction, protection, and the maturation of sentient beings. The text also describes the bodhisattva’s meditative attainments, insight, supernatural knowledges, qualities, stages of practice, relation to the Mahāyāna, and the distinctive features that lead toward unsurpassed awakening. Through these divisions, the Bodhisattvabhūmi presents a complete architecture of bodhisattva training, integrating moral discipline, contemplative cultivation, doctrinal insight, compassionate action, and the gradual perfection of the qualities required for Buddhahood.
