Introduction
The work opens by presenting the Brahmavihāras as noble qualities that lead to a holy and peaceful life. The foreword emphasizes that the text reveals a systematic method for developing loving-kindness toward all beings and explains the path by which one may cultivate a life of moral discipline, meditation, compassion, and insight. The teaching is grounded in the recognition that human existence is inseparable from suffering, change, aging, illness, death, worry, and the burden of the aggregates. In this context, the four Brahmavihāras are not ornamental virtues but essential disciplines for transforming the mind and relating wisely to all sentient beings.
A major portion of the book is devoted to mettā. Mahāsi Sayādaw explains the meaning of loving-kindness, the preparatory arrangements for practice, the proper sitting posture, and the gradual method of extending goodwill. He discusses persons toward whom loving-kindness should not initially be developed, persons toward whom it should not be bestowed in certain ways, and persons toward whom it should first be cultivated. The text gives practical reflections for overcoming anger, including reflection on kamma, patience, the attributes of the Bodhisatta, and the benefits of a give-and-take attitude. It also explains the advantages of mettā, the way mettā-jhāna is achieved, and the relationship between loving-kindness, generosity, and vipassanā meditation.
The later sections broaden the exposition to karuṇā, muditā, and upekkhā. Compassion is developed through awareness of beings oppressed by suffering and helplessness in saṃsāra. Sympathetic joy is cultivated by rejoicing in the success and happiness of others, thereby counteracting envy and resentment. Equanimity is explained through reflection on kamma, especially when beings must experience the results of their own deeds. The book concludes by connecting Brahmavihāra practice with insight into impermanence, suffering, and non-self, showing that these sublime states should mature into wisdom and liberation through vipassanā.
