British Buddhism: Teachings, Practice and Development

The book begins with an introduction to the central research problem: how Buddhism has developed in Britain and whether distinctively British forms of Buddhism are emerging. It then provides a historical overview of Buddhism in Britain, tracing early scholarly interest, Victorian interpretations, the beginnings of Buddhist practice, postwar revival, and the expansion of Buddhist organizations. The main chapters study seven major Buddhist traditions in Britain. The Forest Sangha chapter examines Theravāda monastic discipline, meditation, devotion, lay support, and Thai cultural elements. The Samatha Trust chapter focuses on lay Theravāda meditation, calming practice, ethical precepts, decentralized organization, and Buddhist imagery. Serene Reflection Meditation is analyzed as a Soto Zen tradition shaped by meditation, ceremonial forms, precepts, faith, compassion, and adaptation between monastic and lay contexts. The chapter on SGI-UK explores Nichiren-based chanting, the Lotus Sutra, faith, benefits of practice, organization, and lay activism. The Karma Kagyu chapter considers Tibetan meditation, devotion, lineage, emotional transformation, moral codes, and cultural preservation. The New Kadampa Tradition chapter examines Lamrim meditation, systematic study, devotion to lineage, monastic and lay discipline, and Westernized Tibetan identity.
