The book is structured into five chapters. Chapter Two discusses Han-language Buddhism in China, presenting the principal schools that shaped Chinese Buddhist thought and practice, including Tiantai, Sanlun, Fa Xiang, Huayan, Lu, Mi, Jingtu, and Chan, together with the four famous Buddhist mountains associated with Han Buddhism. Chapter Three introduces Tibetan Buddhism in China, focusing on its origin, development, and major sectarian formations. Chapter Four surveys Pali-language Buddhism in China, especially in Yunnan, with attention to its transmission, sects, customs, temples, and pagodas. Chapter Five presents Buddhism in contemporary China, covering Buddhist institutions, the Buddhist Association of China, modern Buddhist figures, ceremonies, education, culture, caves, architecture, music, publications, dance, painting, charity work, exchanges with Hong Kong, Macao, Taiwan Buddhist circles, and foreign Buddhist exchanges.
