Introduction
The book is organized into eight main chapters. Chapter 1, “Introduction,” provides a general survey of scholarship on the western Himalaya, describes the geo-physical setting of Himachal Pradesh and neighbouring regions, and outlines the cultural background necessary for understanding Buddhist monasticism in this Himalayan zone. Chapter 2, “Buddhist Concept of Monasticism,” discusses the general idea of monastic life in ancient India, the diffusion of the monastic ideal, monastic philosophy, and the organization of monastic life. Chapter 3, “Efflorescence of Buddhist Monasticism in Himachal Pradesh,” traces the historical growth of monasteries through the early period, medieval renaissance, and modern transformation. Chapter 4, “Monastic Centres and Minor Structures,” surveys monasteries and related structures in Lahul Valley, Spiti Valley, Satluj Valley, Beas Valley, and other minor locations. Chapter 5, “Functional Aspects of Monasteries,” examines monasteries as educational, social, economic, political, and administrative institutions. Chapter 6, “Architectural Developments of Monasteries,” studies early, medieval, and modern architectural changes. Chapter 7, “Monastic Art,” analyzes artistic canons, symbolism, pantheology, wall painting, thangkas, sculpture, sacramental artefacts, and musical instruments. Chapter 8 concludes the study, followed by appendices listing monastery locations in Lahul, Spiti, Satluj, and Beas valleys.
