Introduction
The introduction situates Buddhist monasticism as one of the oldest and most enduring monastic traditions in world religious history. Steven Collins explains that the book describes the ideal monastic life preserved in the Theravāda Pāli Canon, especially the Vinaya Piṭaka and Sutta Piṭaka, while also noting the historical spread of Theravāda monasticism in India, Sri Lanka, and mainland Southeast Asia.
The chapters proceed through the central dimensions of monastic existence: the origin of the community, dwelling places, clothing, food, money, chastity, solitude, and the rules of the community. The appendices extend the discussion to nuns, lay supporters, and the precepts, showing how monastic discipline was embedded within a broader Buddhist framework of ethics, renunciation, and religious practice.
