Buddhist Sculptures and Monuments

Buddhist Sculptures and Monuments is an illustrated survey of important examples of Buddhist art and architecture preserved across the Indian subcontinent. Published by the Publications Division, Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, Government of India, the volume presents a carefully selected series of photographs documenting Buddhist sculpture, narrative reliefs, sacred images, stupas, cave architecture, and monumental remains. The collection includes works associated with major Buddhist artistic centres such as Bharhut, Sanchi, Amaravati, Mathura, Gandhara, Taxila, Nalanda, Ajanta, Sarnath, Nagarjunakonda, and Bengal. Among the subjects represented are episodes from the life of the Buddha, including the Dream of Māyā, the Birth of Siddhārtha, the Great Renunciation, Enlightenment, the First Sermon, miracles, and Mahāparinirvāṇa, together with notable Buddha and Bodhisattva images. The volume is particularly valuable as a visual reference for the study of Buddhist archaeology, iconography, sculpture, and architectural history, illustrating the diversity of regional styles and the historical development of Buddhist artistic traditions in South Asia. It also documents major monuments such as the Great Stupa at Sanchi and the Dhamekh Stupa at Sarnath, as well as Buddhist cave architecture at Ajanta.
