Introduction
The book consists of a series of narratives translated from German and adapted for English readers, with some accounts expanded for clarity and completeness. The translator incorporates newly rendered verses from the Therīgāthā and Dhammapada so that the women’s spiritual experiences are presented through both narrative and canonical poetry. The work is intended to inspire readers who seek to follow the Buddha’s path.
The principal biographies examine women whose lives represent different dimensions of Buddhist practice. Queen Mallikā exemplifies generosity, ethical intelligence, and lay devotion; Khemā represents supreme wisdom; Bhaddā Kuṇḍalakesā demonstrates the transition from intellectual disputation to direct realization; and Kisāgotamī embodies the transformation of personal grief through insight into the universality of death. The remaining narratives similarly explore renunciation, discipline, compassion, meditative attainment, and the role of women in preserving and transmitting the Buddha’s teaching.
