Introduction

The book is organized as a collection of sixteen monographs. The opening studies address corrections to Geiger’s Mahāvaṃsa and Cūḷavaṃsa, focusing on specific passages where Buddhadatta proposes alternative readings, translations, and interpretations based on Pāli grammar, Sinhala traditions, and commentarial evidence. Subsequent essays expand the scope to early Buddhist councils, the formation and development of Buddhist sects, the identity and career of Buddhaghosa, the role of later commentators, and questions surrounding figures such as Buddhadatta, Chapada, Saṅgharāja, and King Chandrabhānu. The volume also includes studies on Pāli literature, difficult textual passages, a Burmese mission to Ceylon in 1896, the protection of the Dhamma by the Elders of Yore, and broader outlines of Pāli literary history. Across these studies, the book presents Buddhist history through the lens of textual criticism, linguistic precision, monastic scholarship, and the preservation of Theravāda literary heritage.
