Introduction
The book is organized around the development of Buddhist ethical thought from its early doctrinal background to its mature philosophical expression. Chapter I, “Early Historical and Doctrinal Background,” studies the social, religious, and intellectual conditions in which Buddhist ethics emerged, including Vedic ritualism, asceticism, renunciation, caste structures, and the Buddhist redirection of moral life toward discipline, insight, and liberation. Chapter II, “The Buddhist Doctrine of Karma and the Concept of Action,” examines karma as the ethical foundation of Buddhist life, focusing on intention, moral responsibility, causality, and the consequences of action. Chapter III, “Psychological Analysis and Moral Life,” analyzes the mind, motivation, desire, mental cultivation, and the psychological basis of moral conduct. Chapter IV, “Ethical Ideals,” presents the central Buddhist ideals that guide conduct, including restraint, wisdom, compassion, renunciation, and the cultivation of wholesome states. Chapter V, “Compassion and Perfection,” develops the moral significance of compassion and the ideal of ethical perfection, especially as these relate to the welfare of others and the deepening of spiritual maturity. Chapter VI, “Beyond Good and Evil,” reflects on the transcendence of ordinary moral dualism within the higher Buddhist path, where ethical discipline becomes integrated with wisdom and liberation.
