Introduction

The preface discusses the antiquity, transmission, and textual authority of the Pāli Nikāyas, arguing that the canonical collections preserve very early Buddhist material and were known before or around the time of Aśoka. Rhys Davids also explains the difficulty of translating Pāli suttas into English, especially because the texts were originally structured for oral memorization, with repeated formulas, technical terms, and condensed doctrinal lists. The main body presents translated dialogues with introductory notes. The Brahmajāla Suttanta analyzes moral discipline and speculative views; the Sāmaññaphala Suttanta explains the fruits of the monastic life; the Ambaṭṭha and Soṇadaṇḍa suttas address caste and the meaning of true spiritual nobility; and the Kūṭadanta Suttanta reinterprets sacrifice through Buddhist ethics, generosity, and nonviolence.
