Introduction
The preface explains that the work arose from the author’s teaching of the Vinaya Piṭaka at Nava Nalanda Mahavihara, where he encountered many difficulties in interpreting monastic rules and ecclesiastical terminology. It introduces the Vinaya Piṭaka as the earliest available source on Buddhist monastic life in ancient India, covering the Mahāvagga, Cullavagga, Pārājika, Pācittiya, and Parivāra, together with the Pātimokkha rules for monks and nuns.
The dictionary then proceeds alphabetically, beginning with terms such as Aṃsabaddhaka, Akālayāgusa, Akālacīvara, Aggisālā, Acelaka, Adhikaraṇa, and Adhiṭṭhāna. Each entry explains the meaning of the term, its Vinaya context, relevant rules, offences, ritual procedures, and textual references. The work therefore functions as a practical research tool for Pāli scholars, Indologists, Vinaya specialists, and students of early Buddhist institutional history.
