Introduction
The introduction, “Beyond Superstition,” by Kevin Trainor, reviews the history of Western scholarly interpretations of relic veneration and argues for a more nuanced understanding of relics within Buddhist traditions. It discusses how relics function as memory-sites, devotional objects, sources of merit, signs of the Buddha’s continuing presence, and material anchors for Buddhist communities.
The volume contains seven chapters: John S. Strong compares Buddhist relics with relic traditions in other religions; David Germano studies living relics in Tibet; Bernard Faure examines Buddhist relics and Japanese regalia; Jacob N. Kinnard analyzes relics, images, and the field of the Buddha’s presence in India; Donald K. Swearer studies signs of the Buddha in Northern Thai chronicles; and Robert H. Sharf reflects on the allure and theoretical significance of Buddhist relics. The book concludes with contributor information and an index.
