Fundamentals of Indian Art

Fundamentals of Indian Art by Surendra Nath Dasgupta, published in 1954 by Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, is a concise but philosophically rich study of the basic principles underlying Indian artistic creation. Rather than treating Indian art primarily as a chronological history of monuments and styles, Dasgupta approaches it through the intellectual, spiritual, aesthetic, and symbolic ideas that shape its visual forms. The book is organized into an introduction and five principal sections: Special Features of Indian Art; Symbolism and Idealism; Technique and Methods of Indian Art; Some Characteristics of Indian Art; and Theories of Indian Art. A central argument of the book is that Indian art cannot be understood merely as an imitation of external nature. Dasgupta emphasizes the importance of inner vision, meditation, intuition, spiritual idealization, and symbolic expression. In his discussion of images of Hindu and Buddhist deities, he explains how physical forms are often subordinated to spiritual meaning: multiple arms, faces, gestures, proportions, and other iconographic features serve to communicate qualities and powers that cannot be represented through ordinary naturalistic form alone. The study also explores the relation between artistic representation and Indian philosophical and literary traditions. Dasgupta draws upon ideas connected with dhyāna, Sanskrit literature, Kālidāsa, artistic proportion, symbolic form, and the transformation of nature through the artist’s inner creative vision. In this framework, Indian art is presented as an attempt to express an inward and spiritual reality rather than simply reproduce visible appearances. For students of Indian aesthetics, Buddhist and Hindu iconography, religious art, and the philosophy of art, Fundamentals of Indian Art remains a useful historical contribution to the interpretation of the conceptual foundations of classical Indian visual culture.
