Gandhāran Art in Pakistan

Gandhāran Art in Pakistan, with an introduction and descriptive catalogue by Harald Ingholt, is a major scholarly study of the Buddhist artistic tradition that flourished in ancient Gandhāra, particularly in the region of present-day northern Pakistan. Published by Pantheon Books, the volume contains 577 illustrations photographed by Islay Lyons, together with 77 images from other sources, making it an exceptionally rich visual record of Gandhāran sculpture and archaeological material. The book begins by examining the geographical and historical setting of Gandhāra, including the Peshawar Valley, Taxila, Swat, Buner, and neighbouring regions, and situates the development of Gandhāran art within the complex political and cultural history of north-western South Asia. Ingholt discusses successive Achaemenid, Greek, Indo-Greek, Śaka, Parthian, Kushan, and later influences, while paying particular attention to the flourishing of Buddhism under the Kushans. A central concern of the volume is Buddhist iconography. The sculptures illustrate episodes from the Buddha’s life, representations of the Buddha and Bodhisattvas, narrative reliefs, Jātaka themes, worship scenes, deities, donors, architectural elements, and other aspects of Gandhāran religious and social life. The study also considers the emergence of Mahāyāna imagery and figures such as Maitreya and Avalokiteśvara, as well as the stylistic interaction between Indian Buddhist traditions and Hellenistic, Roman, Iranian, and Central Asian artistic forms. In addition to its extensive photographic plates, the volume provides maps, an introduction, a descriptive catalogue, an index of locations, and a general index, making it particularly useful as a reference work for the study of Gandhāran Buddhism, Buddhist archaeology, iconography, sculpture, and the transmission of Buddhist art across South and Central Asia
