Introduction
The work opens with an introduction on the challenges of writing Gotama’s biography, noting the absence of an early full life-story and reviewing the principal sources: the Nidānakathā, Mahāvagga, suttas, Dhammapada, Itivuttaka, later works such as the Buddhacarita, Lalitavistara, Jinacarita, and Buddhist monuments. Chapter I presents the early life of Gotama, including the political and social world of Buddhist India, the Sakya clan, Kapilavatthu, his birth, childhood, education, family background, marriage, and early desire to serve his people. Chapter II narrates his quest and conquest, including Rajagaha, austerities at Uruvelā, return to normal life, enlightenment at Buddhagaya, the meaning of Nibbāna, his agnosticism on metaphysical questions, the Middle Way, the Noble Eightfold Path, and the first disciples. Chapter III describes Gotama at the height of his power, the expansion of the mission, conversions of leading disciples, visits to his family, lay followers, women’s admission to the Saṅgha, and relations with political rulers. Chapter IV studies the daily life of Gotama and his disciples, including the organization of the Saṅgha, Vassa, ordination, monastic democracy, teaching situations, and Ananda’s role. Chapter V treats his old age, Devadatta’s schism, Ajātasattu, final days, passing away, relics, and the date of death. Chapter VI analyzes “the secret of Gotama,” emphasizing his personal magnetism, moral teaching, warrior-chief background, democratic Saṅgha, disciples’ devotion, and humor. Chapter VII presents Gotama as teacher, focusing on moral diagnosis, clear analysis, the Four Noble Truths, higher teachings, free will, and the author’s final assessment of Gotama’s religious significance.
