Introduction
The book is organized into eighteen chapters that present Gotama’s life and teaching as a coherent human and ethical mission. “My Early Life” reconstructs Gotama’s princely background, family setting, education, social awareness, and awakening to the realities of human suffering. “My Quest” follows his search for a more adequate path beyond inherited religious systems, asceticism, and speculative doctrines. “My Message” explains the core of his teaching as a message for human welfare, emphasizing will, worth, conduct, and the transformation of life. “The Man” develops the book’s central thesis that Gotama must be understood neither as a god nor as a metaphysical abstraction, but as a fully human teacher addressing the human condition. “Other Things I Taught,” “My Company,” and “Our Work” examine his wider teachings, disciples, and collective mission. “Tendencies at Work Within,” “Other Disciples, Men and Women,” and “Other Worlds, Musing and Moods” consider inner tendencies, broader communities of followers, and reflective dimensions of the teaching. “World Within the World,” “The Laity and I,” and “Latter Years” turn to social, lay, and late-life aspects of Gotama’s work. “The Fixed Wording,” “Monk-Values and My Protest,” “My Passing from Earth,” “After-Days,” and “Last Words to Earth” address textual transmission, monastic interpretation, the final phase of his life, and the later reception of his message.
