Introduction
The book organizes its main content around individual portraits of the Buddha’s eminent disciples. The first large section presents eighty male disciples, beginning with Aññā Koṇḍañña, the first to understand the Buddha’s teaching after the Dhammacakkappavattana Sutta, and continuing with major figures such as Sāriputta, renowned for wisdom and exposition of the Dhamma; Mahā Moggallāna, foremost in psychic powers; Mahā Kassapa, associated with austerity and the preservation of the Dhamma after the Buddha’s passing; Anuruddha, distinguished for divine vision; Ānanda, remembered for his service and memory of the teachings; Upāli, eminent in Vinaya; Rāhula, the Buddha’s son and model of discipline; and Aṅgulimāla, whose transformation illustrates the redemptive power of the Dhamma. The second section presents thirteen eminent female disciples, including Mahāpajāpatī Gotamī, the Buddha’s foster mother and first bhikkhunī; Khemā and Uppalavaṇṇā, foremost among the nuns; Paṭācārā, associated with discipline and insight after profound suffering; Dhammadinnā, noted for doctrinal understanding; and Kisā Gotamī, whose story teaches impermanence and the universality of death. Across these portraits, the book highlights the diversity of personalities, social backgrounds, karmic histories, spiritual attainments, and exemplary qualities within the Buddha’s community, showing how the path of virtue, concentration, wisdom, renunciation, and perseverance culminates in liberation.
