Introduction

The first volume begins with an introduction into Indian thought by Leo Gabriel and Frauwallner’s own methodological orientation, then surveys the periods and traditions of Indian philosophy before entering the ancient period through the philosophy of the Veda, the Upaniṣads, and the philosophical materials of the epic tradition. It then presents the Buddha and the Jina, covering the Buddhist canon, the Buddha’s life and preaching, the Buddhist path of deliverance, the Four Noble Truths, dependent origination, nirvāṇa, the Jaina canon, the life and doctrine of the Jina, and the Ājīvika teacher Makkhali Gosāla. The final large section of Volume I treats Sāṃkhya and classical Yoga, explaining the history, literature, doctrines, cosmology, psychology, bondage, liberation, God, and yogic practice. The second volume continues with the period of the systems and focuses first on the nature-philosophical schools and Vaiśeṣika, including elements, world-construction, body, sense-organs, soul, atoms, movement, causality, adṛṣṭa, space, time, categories, substances, qualities, inherence, perception, and Praśastapāda’s classical formulation. It then discusses the Jaina system according to Umāsvāti and Kundakunda, including categories, world-structure, living beings, soul, knowledge, and deliverance. The final chapter examines Indian materialism, its relation to political theory, early materialistic doctrines, and the Lokāyata system.
