Introduction

The book is organized into seven chapters. It first presents the sources used for reconstructing Theravāda history, then discusses the introduction, development, and decline of Buddhism in India. The following chapters examine Theravāda Buddhism in Ceylon and Southeast Asia before the eleventh century, Ceylon’s political relations with Southeast Asia, and religious exchanges between Ceylon and Burma. The later chapters focus on Ceylon’s religious and cultural relations with Siam, Cambodia, and Laos, showing how ordination lineages, monastic reform, chronicles, inscriptions, and royal patronage shaped the wider Theravāda Buddhist world.
