Introduction

The book begins with the essay “Where There’s a Will, There’s a Way,” which introduces kamma as intentional action rather than fate. It explains bodily, verbal, and mental kamma, the dynamics of cause and effect, inherited patterns, rebirth, the sense of self, and the possibility of awakening through understanding volition and its results. The section “Bright Kamma” develops the theme of wholesome action. It explores how generosity, kindness, ethical restraint, and wise attention create clarity and ease. This is followed by “The Kamma of Meditation,” which presents meditation as active training: calming, stabilizing, and refining intention so that the mind can see and release its habitual formations. “Kamma and Memory” examines how memory, identity, and emotional impressions shape present experience. “Regarding the World” expands the discussion to perception, social conditioning, and the ways the mind constructs a world through attention and interpretation. These chapters show how kamma operates not only in outward action but also in how experience is received and organized. “The Kamma of Relationship” focuses on interpersonal life, showing how speech, responsiveness, empathy, and emotional habits affect both oneself and others. The final major chapter, “Is There An End?”, addresses the cessation of kamma through the Noble Eightfold Path, insight into grasping, and the ending of the selfing process. Interleaved meditation sections provide practical contemplative exercises that support each thematic development.
