Introduction

Chapter I, “The Law of Karma,” defines karma as action and causation, but also as a moral law in which the doer experiences the consequences of the causes he or she sets in motion. The chapter relates karma to moral equilibrium, spiritual responsibility, and the wider “Wisdom-Religion” framework used by the author. Chapter II, “Karma in Action,” explains how karma operates through thought, will, motive, and deed. It stresses that action begins in the mind, and therefore the control and purification of thought are central to ethical life. The chapter also discusses karmic agents, karmic responsibility, motive, and the complex relation between conscious and unconscious intention. Chapter III, “What Karma Is Not,” clarifies misconceptions about karma. The author rejects the idea that karma is blind fate, arbitrary punishment, or a rigid mechanical account of moral credit and debt. Chapter IV, “What Karma Explains,” presents karma as a framework for understanding inequality, suffering, character, opportunity, and moral causation. Chapter V, “Some Difficulties Considered,” addresses philosophical and practical objections to karma, especially questions about justice, responsibility, and the complexity of cause and effect. Chapter VI, “Rebirth,” explains rebirth as a necessary extension of karma, since moral causes often require more than one lifetime to ripen. Chapter VII surveys who believes in karma and rebirth, showing that these doctrines appear across several religious and philosophical traditions. Chapter VIII, “Karma and Rebirth Applied,” considers their practical relevance for conduct, self-discipline, and social life. Chapter IX, “The Ending of Karma and Rebirth,” turns toward liberation, presenting the highest goal as freedom from the cycle of karmic becoming.
