Kathina Then and Now

The booklet begins from the observation that Kathina has become an internationally established religious celebration in which the monastic and lay communities participate in shared meritorious activities. Nevertheless, centuries of regional adaptation have produced substantial differences in ritual practice and interpretation. Aggacitta Bhikkhu therefore returns to the Pāli Vinaya, its commentaries, and subcommentaries to identify the ceremony’s scriptural foundations and provide a reliable standard for evaluating modern practices. The central discussion reconstructs the traditional account of thirty monks who completed the rains retreat but arrived before the Buddha with their robes drenched and worn. In response, the Buddha permitted monks who had completed the vassa to spread the Kathina and receive five temporary disciplinary privileges. The work then explains the legal and procedural conditions governing the ceremony and compares them with current customs. Its concluding sections encourage contemporary Buddhist communities to preserve the spirit and legal integrity of the Vinaya while adapting the ceremony responsibly to modern social circumstances.
