Introduction
The opening sections explain that liberation means freedom from worldly bondage and suffering. The author introduces the distinction between the path leading to worldly gain and the path leading to Nibbāna, stressing viveka or seclusion in three forms: bodily solitude, mental detachment from passions, and complete liberation.
The section on “Nibbāna Through Sīla” emphasizes virtue as the foundation of the Buddhist path. It explains that practitioners must cultivate wholesome conduct, avoid unwholesome action, and understand karma as moral causation. Sīla is presented not merely as ethical restraint, but as the necessary basis for concentration and insight.
“The First Step to Nibbāna” through “The Eighth Step to Nibbāna” develop the path progressively through the framework of practice. These sections correspond to the gradual cultivation of the Noble Eightfold Path, showing how right understanding, moral conduct, mental discipline, mindfulness, and concentration lead the practitioner toward liberation.
“The Nature of Nibbāna” explains Nibbāna as the end of suffering, rebirth, craving, and worldly instability. “The Path of Liberation” and “The Happiness of Nibbāna” further describe the peace and freedom associated with realization. The later sections, including “Medicine of Meditation,” “Buddhism, Science,” and “The Nibbāna the Liberator,” connect Buddhist meditation and liberation with modern life, practical wellbeing, and the universal relevance of the Buddha’s teaching.
