Introduction
Mānameyodaya is a concise philosophical manual of the Bhāṭṭa school of Pūrva Mīmāṃsā, presenting a systematic account of valid knowledge and its objects. The first part, Mānapariccheda, examines the recognized means of valid cognition: perception, inference, verbal authority, analogy, presumption, and non-cognition or negation. It discusses the definitions, mechanisms, classifications, and limitations of these epistemic instruments while critically engaging with rival positions from the Prābhākara, Nyāya, Buddhist, grammatical, and other Indian philosophical traditions.
The second part, Meyapariccheda, analyzes the principal categories that constitute the objects of valid knowledge, including substance, genus, quality, action, and non-existence. Through comparison and refutation, the work clarifies the realist orientation of Bhāṭṭa Mīmāṃsā and its distinctive positions on cognition, language, scriptural authority, causality, universals, perception, and ontology. This edition provides a revised Sanskrit text, an English translation, extensive analytical contents, comparative tables, notes, and a glossary, making the work an important resource for the study of Mīmāṃsā epistemology and classical Indian philosophy.
