Introduction

The main body of the book is structured into fourteen chapters. It begins with the claim that Jesus, like Gautama Buddha, taught the doctrines of karma and rebirth, then turns to Pistis Sophia and non-canonical Gospel traditions as supplementary sources for interpreting Christian doctrine. Subsequent chapters examine the rebirth of Elias as John the Baptist, Origen’s view of rebirth as connected with sin, Israelite beliefs concerning rebirth, and different types of karma attributed to Jesus’ teaching. The work then develops a comparative cosmological discussion through the Christian concept of the universe, possible echoes of Buddhist legends and teachings, and a doctrinal analysis of kamma. Later chapters contrast the “Path of the Gods” with the Buddhist path, defend Gnosticism historically, consider science and rebirth, and argue that ritual emphasis and attachment to the “Kingdom” obscure the deeper goal of liberation. The conclusion consolidates Baptist’s core thesis: that Nibbāna must be understood as the cessation of rebirth and suffering, not as a heavenly kingdom or eternal personal survival.
