Introduction

The work is organized into three books and eighty-one chapters. Book One begins with Svasti, the buffalo boy, and gradually introduces Siddhartha’s renunciation, early encounters, ascetic practice, Sujata’s offering, awakening, and the first formation of the Buddhist community. Through these early chapters, the book presents the Buddha’s path as one grounded in simplicity, mindfulness, compassion, and direct experience. Book Two follows the expansion of the Buddha’s teaching life. It describes the growth of the Sangha, the Buddha’s return to his family, the ordination of disciples, teachings on mindfulness, love, understanding, impermanence, dependent co-arising, and the gradual formation of a community shaped by discipline and compassion. The chapters also present important encounters with lay followers, rulers, seekers, and opponents. Book Three develops the mature phase of the Buddha’s ministry. It includes teachings on awareness of breathing, the raft metaphor, emptiness, non-attachment, the Four Mountains, the Three Wondrous Gates, quiet resistance, hidden rice, and the final years of the Buddha’s life. The closing chapters portray the Buddha’s last journey, his final instructions, and the continuing presence of the Dharma through mindful living and practice.
