Origin and Growth of Caste in India, Volume I (c. B.C. 2000–300) by Nripendra Kumar Dutt is an important early twentieth-century study of the historical development of the Indian caste system. Published in 1931, the work examines caste not as a fixed institution but as the outcome of a long process of social, religious, occupational, racial, and cultural transformation. In his preface, Dutt states that his purpose is to present a systematic and comprehensive history of caste and caste rules from the early Vedic period onward, while also tracing the social and psychological forces that shaped the institution. The volume begins with definitions and competing theories concerning the origins of varṇa and jāti, then investigates caste in the Ṛgvedic and later Vedic periods. It discusses the Brahmanical priesthood, the relations among Brahmins, Kṣatriyas, Vaiśyas, and Śūdras, occupational differentiation, marriage restrictions, ritual purity, social hierarchy, and the interaction between Aryan and non-Aryan communities. A particularly valuable section compares Brahmanical accounts with evidence from early Buddhist literature and the Jātakas, making the book useful for research on ancient Indian society and the social background of early Buddhism. Although some of its historical and racial interpretations reflect the scholarship of its period and should be compared with more recent research, the book remains a useful primary example of early modern scholarship on the formation and evolution of caste in ancient India.
