Introduction
Pāli Literature of South-East Asia surveys the historical development and distinctive characteristics of Pāli literary activity in the Theravāda Buddhist cultures of Southeast Asia, with particular attention to Thailand and its connections with Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia, and Laos. The study traces the transmission of the Pāli Canon and commentarial tradition into the region, examining the role of monastic institutions, royal patronage, ecclesiastical networks, and educational centres in preserving and extending Pāli scholarship. It identifies major authors, texts, chronicles, grammatical works, doctrinal treatises, cosmological writings, ritual manuals, and other forms of religious literature produced within local Theravāda traditions.
The book also demonstrates that Southeast Asian Pāli literature was not merely a passive continuation of Indian or Sri Lankan sources. Regional scholars adapted inherited textual traditions to local historical, institutional, and devotional contexts, producing works that contributed to Buddhist historiography, monastic discipline, doctrinal interpretation, linguistic study, and religious practice. By documenting these literary traditions, Hammalawa Saddhātissa highlights the importance of Southeast Asia as a major centre for the preservation, transmission, and creative development of Pāli Buddhist learning.
