Introduction
Part of the Problem, Part of the Solution: Religion Today and Tomorrow is an edited volume based on plenary sessions from the global congress “World’s Religions After September 11,” held in Montreal. Edited by Arvind Sharma, the book examines religion’s ambiguous role in contemporary global affairs: religion can contribute to violence, conflict, exclusion, and identity politics, but it can also become a powerful resource for peace, human rights, compassion, interfaith dialogue, nonviolence, social justice, and global ethics.
The volume brings together prominent religious thinkers, scholars, activists, and public figures to discuss major issues facing religion in the modern world. Its central argument is that religion should not be viewed only through its destructive potential after September 11, but must also be engaged as a constructive force capable of addressing human suffering, social fragmentation, war, injustice, and moral decline.
