Sāsanavaṃsa

Sāsanavaṃsa is a significant Pāli work of Burmese Buddhist historiography that traces the history and transmission of the Buddhist dispensation across different regions of the Theravāda world. Beginning with the traditional account of the Buddha, the early councils, the preservation of the teaching, and the missionary activity associated with the age of Aśoka, the text moves through various Buddhist regions such as Sīhala, Suvaṇṇabhūmi, Yonakarattha, Vanavāsi, Mahimsakamaṇḍala, Cīnarattha, Mahārattha, and Aparanta. Its most substantial contribution lies in its treatment of Aparanta, understood in the Burmese tradition as Mramma or Burma proper, where the history of Buddhism is presented through the close relationship between the Saṅgha, royal authority, relics, scriptures, monastic discipline, and religious reform. The work does not function primarily as a political chronicle; rather, it evaluates kings, elders, and institutions according to their role in preserving, purifying, and strengthening the Sāsana. Through accounts of missionary lineages, monastic communities, royal patronage, doctrinal protection, and the suppression of heterodox tendencies, Sāsanavaṃsa offers an important window into how Burmese Theravāda Buddhism understood its own legitimacy, continuity, and place within the wider Buddhist world.
