Introduction

The main content of Social Aspects of Early Buddhism is organized around six chapters that examine early Buddhism as a socially engaged and ethically grounded tradition. The first chapter introduces the research framework, explaining the use of the Pāli Canon, the structure of the Tipiṭaka, the methodological approach, and the historical background of Indian society before the Buddha. The second chapter studies the Buddhist view of the origin and evolution of human society, comparing it with Brahmanical creation theories and modern scientific perspectives. The third chapter focuses on unity and equality, showing how the Buddha challenged caste hierarchy, inherited social privilege, slavery, ritualism, and exclusionary social structures. The fourth chapter investigates the social philosophy of early Buddhism by examining family, social institutions, moral duties, social ethics, and rational conduct in daily life, especially through teachings that replace superstition with practical moral responsibility. The fifth chapter presents Buddhist economic thought, contrasting materialistic economic models with a Buddhist vision that integrates production, consumption, distribution, saving, investment, human dignity, moral responsibility, and spiritual development. The sixth chapter discusses the Bhikkhu community as an ideal society, explaining its origin, aims, administration, values, and role as a disciplined model of simplicity, equality, unity, restraint, and spiritual purpose.
