Introduction
The main content of the three-volume set is arranged as a historically oriented anthology covering major phases and systems of Indian philosophical thought. Volume I begins with the intellectual and cultural background of early India, including the Indus Valley, Vedic studies, Upaniṣadic thought, yoga, karma, Pūrva-Mīmāṃsā, the Bhagavad Gītā, and Vedānta, thereby establishing the early ritual, speculative, and doctrinal foundations of Indian philosophy. Volume II examines early sectarian and rational traditions, beginning with Indian sects in the Buddha’s time and then moving through Lokāyata, materialism, Sāṃkhya, the philosophical sūtras, Nyāya, Vaiśeṣika, atomism, and Navya-Nyāya, with attention to chronology, logical categories, and the development of secular philosophical systems. Volume III extends the inquiry into Jainism and Buddhism, including Mahāvīra, Anekāntavāda, Buddhist doctrine, schools of Buddhism, the Pāli Canon, Mahāyāna, Nāgārjuna, Vasubandhu, Vijñānavāda, Buddhist dharmas, Dignāga, Dharmakīrti, Gauḍapāda, Māyāvāda, and Vedānta–Buddhism relations. Across the three volumes, the anthology presents Indian philosophy not as a single unified doctrine, but as a dynamic historical field shaped by competing interpretations, textual debates, sectarian encounters, and evolving philosophical problems.
