Introduction

The book is organized around eight core chapters. “Altered States of Consciousness, Symbols, and Social Theory” establishes the theoretical foundation by linking Durkheim’s collective consciousness and Jung’s collective unconscious with dreams, visions, symbols, mandalas, deity yoga, and consort communication. “Consciousness, Power, and Renunciation” studies sacred/profane boundaries, communitas, “mad saints,” and shamanic crisis as models for understanding tantric religious identity. “Consorts, Myth, and Sacrifice in Hindu Tantra” examines love, separation, Śiva, erotic asceticism, and sacrifice as symbolic structures relevant to tantric consort relations. “Sacred Physiology, Yoga, and Death” analyzes the three bodies of the Buddha, death, alchemy, initiation, and subtle-body transformation. “Identity, Biography, and Shamanic Death” uses sacred biography to show how death-rebirth patterns and the sacred feminine shape tantric identity. “The Purification of Aggression” studies wrathful deities, ritual violence, magical power, and the transformation of aggression into awakened energy. “Transmission and Identity” considers how transmission operates as discovery and how biography constructs continuity between teacher, deity, and practitioner. “The Subtle Body and Emotional Energy” consolidates the argument by examining subtle-body symbolism, sacred ambivalence, women, the “left,” and the way emotional energy circulates through body, ritual, gender, and consciousness.
