Introduction
The book is organized into six major parts. The first part presents the theoretical background of cultural psychiatry, including its historical development, anthropology, psychology, spirituality, biological psychiatry, ethnicity, and cultural capability in mental healthcare. The second part examines the relationship between culture and mental health through topics such as psychopathology, development, explanatory models, culture-bound syndromes, epidemiology, acculturation, identity, and cultural consonance. The third part focuses on specific mental disorders, including neurosis, schizophrenia, affective disorders, substance misuse, suicidal behaviour, personality disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorder, eating disorders, childhood and adolescent disorders, and disorders of ageing. The fourth part discusses theoretical aspects of management, including trauma, therapist–patient interaction, multicultural service development, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, psychological assessment, spirituality, and suicide. The fifth part addresses clinical management with special groups, including people with intellectual disabilities, children, refugees, elderly persons, and liaison psychiatry. The final part discusses cultural research, training, racism, migration, and the future direction of cultural psychiatry.
