Introduction
Introduction:
The book presents the life of the Buddha in a continuous chronological narrative, beginning with the Sakyan background, the lineage of King Suddhodana and Queen Māyā, the birth at Lumbinī, the prophecies concerning the child, and the early signs of Siddhattha’s exceptional destiny. It then follows his childhood, education, youth, marriage, encounter with the four fore-signs, and the Great Renunciation, before describing his search for liberation through meetings with renowned teachers, years of austerity, Sujātā’s offering, the battle with Māra, and the attainment of enlightenment. The central portion traces the beginning of the Buddha’s teaching career, including the first preaching of the Dhamma, the ordination of early disciples, the expansion of missionary activity, the conversion of ascetics, kings, Brahmins, lay devotees, and the establishment of the monastic community, including the Order of Nuns. The later chapters present major events from the Buddha’s ministry, such as his visits to Kapilavatthu and other regions, his relationship with foremost disciples and lay supporters, his daily routine, his attendants, his engagement with rival teachers, the opposition he faced, the performance of miracles, the conversion of notable figures, his guidance to gods and Brahmās, his compassion toward the distressed, the schemes of Devadatta, and the events leading to his final days and passing away. Overall, the book offers a traditional and source-based account of the Buddha’s life, emphasizing both his historical mission and his spiritual significance as the Fully Enlightened One.
