Introduction
The book is organized into thematic chapters that build a broad portrait of the Buddha, his world, and his community. It begins with the cultural and political background of ancient India, including the land of Jambudīpa, the caste system, Brahmanism, ascetic movements, and the rise of new religious ideas. It then turns to the Sakyans, the Buddha’s clan, and describes their social organization, pride, political vulnerability, and eventual decline. The following chapters explore the Buddha’s physical presence, personality, teaching style, compassion, humour, debating skill, and daily routine, presenting him as both a historical figure and a spiritual ideal. The book then examines the foundation and discipline of the order of monks and nuns, before focusing on major disciples and supporters such as the two chief disciples, Ānanda, Aṅgulimāla, Anāthapiṇḍika, Rāhula, and prominent lay followers. Later sections address internal conflict, including the crisis at Kosambī and the opposition of Devadatta, showing how the early Buddhist community developed through both harmony and challenge.
