Introduction
The book is organized around the Buddha’s liberating message and the gradual structure of practice. It begins with the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path, then explains the threefold division of the path into morality (sīla), concentration (samādhi), and wisdom (paññā). The section on morality presents purity of conduct and the ascetical means of purification. The section on concentration develops purity of mind through general principles of meditation and specific exercises such as the ten kasinas, cemetery meditations, ten recollections, mindfulness of breathing, contemplation of peace, the four divine abodes, immaterial spheres, perception of the loathsomeness of food, and analysis of the four elements. The section on wisdom examines the five aggregates, twelve bases, eighteen elements, twenty-two faculties, Four Noble Truths, dependent origination, and the higher purifications: purity of understanding, escape from doubt, knowledge and vision regarding path and not-path, knowledge and vision of progress, and final knowledge and vision. The work therefore functions as a structured manual of the Buddhist path, integrating scriptural doctrine, contemplative method, and the stages of insight leading toward deliverance.
