The Buddhist Art of Gandhāra: The Story of the Early School, Its Birth, Growth and Decline by Sir John Marshall, published by Cambridge University Press for the Department of Archaeology in Pakistan in 1960, is an important study of the historical development of Gandhāran Buddhist art.
