The Concise Sanskrit-English Dictionary

The primary objective of the book is to provide students with a dictionary that was concise, inexpensive, and convenient, while containing the vocabulary most frequently required in ordinary Sanskrit study. He contrasts this objective with larger dictionaries by V. S. Apte and L. R. Vaidya, which, although valuable scholarly works, were comparatively bulky and expensive for many students. His own dictionary therefore emphasizes utility over exhaustive philological documentation. 

The author acknowledges his dependence on earlier Sanskrit lexicographers and dictionaries, including Monier-Williams, H. H. Wilson, V. S. Apte, the later M. R. Kale, R. Vaidya, and other Sanskrit lexical works. The second-edition preface records the publication of a revised edition in April 1933. The introductory apparatus also supplies abbreviations and brief instructions for interpreting the compressed organization of entries.
