The Dathavansa; or, The History of the Tooth-Relic of Gotama Buddha

Chapter I opens with homage to the Triple Gem and presents the larger sacred background of the relic story: the Bodhisatta Sumedha’s aspiration before Dīpaṅkara Buddha, the fulfillment of the perfections, the birth as Siddhattha, renunciation, awakening under the Bodhi-tree, the first turning of the Wheel of Dhamma, and the establishment of the Buddha’s dispensation. Chapter II continues with the Buddha’s visits to Lanka, including the subduing of Yakkhas, reconciliation of Nāgas, sanctification of sacred sites, the Parinibbāna at Kusinārā, the cremation, and the distribution of relics, leading to the preservation of the left tooth-relic. Chapter III narrates the transmission of the relic to Dantapura in Kalinga, its worship by successive kings, the conversion of King Guhasiva, the hostility of rival ascetics, and the order from King Paṇḍu of Pāṭaliputta to bring the relic to his court. Chapter IV describes political conflict, the defeat of hostile forces, the return of the relic to Kalinga, renewed threats against Guhasiva, and the decision to entrust the relic to Prince Danta Kumāra and Princess Hemamālā for safe conveyance to Lanka. Chapter V recounts their journey to Anurādhapura, their grief on learning of King Mahāsena’s death, their approach to King Kittisirimegha, and the solemn reception, veneration, and installation of the tooth-relic in Lanka.
