Introduction

This book is organized around the Sāmaññaphala Sutta, the discourse on the “fruits of recluseship,” and the traditional commentarial explanations attached to it. The main discourse develops a complete vision of Buddhist spiritual training through the encounter between King Ajātasattu and the Buddha, beginning with the king’s search for a teacher and moving through the Buddha’s critique of inadequate doctrines, the discipline of the monk, moral purification, restraint, mindfulness, meditative absorption, liberating knowledge, and final emancipation. The commentarial section deepens the reading by explaining key episodes, doctrinal phrases, biographical background, the six outside teachers, the king’s moral crisis, and the technical stages of practice described in the sutta. As a whole, the volume presents the Buddhist path as an integrated corporate framework of ethical governance, disciplined renunciation, contemplative excellence, and liberating wisdom, while also showing how Theravāda exegesis preserves and operationalizes the doctrinal architecture of the early canon.
