The opening section offers comparative treatments of concepts of God in the Hebrew Scriptures, New Testament, postbiblical Judaism, postbiblical Christianity, and Islam. These articles examine divine names and attributes, monotheism, revelation, creation, providence, transcendence and immanence, theological development, and philosophical reflection on the nature of God. 

A major section on “Goddess Worship” surveys female divinities historically and comparatively, including ancient Near Eastern, Hellenistic, Hindu, and theoretical perspectives. It discusses fertility, motherhood, sovereignty, protection, death and regeneration, sexuality, social organization, and modern interpretations of goddess traditions. The related “Gods and Goddesses” entry develops a broader comparative typology of divine beings and their functions in cosmology, nature, society, kingship, fertility, war, healing, and everyday life.
