Introduction

Front Matter and Introduction The scanned volume includes a frontispiece image of the Buddha, a title page with the refuge formula — Buddham śaraṇam gacchāmi, Dhammam śaraṇam gacchāmi, Sangham śaraṇam gacchāmi — and an introduction by Anagarika H. Dharmapala. Dharmapala recommends the work especially to non-Buddhists and scientific agnostics, emphasizing its rational and humanistic presentation of the Dhamma. Preface The preface states that the book developed from essays on Buddhist subjects originally contributed to South Indian magazines. Narasu explains that his aim is to present the leading ideas of Buddhism in light of modern knowledge, without claiming originality or advanced Pāli/Sanskrit scholarship. Main Chapters The book is organized into major thematic chapters: The Historic Buddha, The Rationality of Buddhism, The Morality of Buddhism, Buddhism and Caste, Woman in Buddhism, The Four Great Truths, Buddhism and Asceticism, Buddhism and Pessimism, The Noble Eightfold Path, The Riddle of the World, Personality, Death and After, and The Summum Bonum. Core Argument Narasu presents Buddhism as a rational religion of ethical self-effort. He rejects supernaturalism, caste hierarchy, blind authority, and belief in an eternal self. The Buddha’s teaching is interpreted through karma, compassion, moral responsibility, impermanence, non-self, and the possibility of liberation through disciplined practice. Philosophical and Ethical Focus The later chapters examine Buddhist views of causality, personality, death, rebirth, karma, Nirvāṇa, and the final good. Nirvāṇa is not described as annihilation or absorption into a universal soul, but as the extinction of lust, hatred, and ignorance, together with the realization of perfect love, righteousness, peace, and freedom.
