Introduction

The book opens with Buddhism as a tradition of social service, emphasizing that the Buddha and his disciples worked for the moral, economic, and social welfare of the people. It then analyzes the evolution of bhikkhu life, showing how monastic discipline and practice adapted to different circumstances while preserving the central authority of the Dhamma and Vinaya. The middle chapters examine the historical establishment of Buddhism in Ceylon, especially through the mission of Mahinda and the integration of Buddhism into Sinhala national life. Rāhula presents the bhikkhu as a key agent in education, cultural development, religious administration, literary production, and the protection of national identity. The work also discusses the role of monasteries, councils, Buddhist learning, arts, crafts, and literature in sustaining Buddhist civilization. The later chapters focus on periods of foreign domination and religious decline, particularly under Portuguese, Dutch, and British rule. Rāhula explains how colonial strategies weakened Buddhist institutions and created tension between monks and lay society. The concluding chapters highlight the Buddhist revival, the recovery of monastic public leadership, and the importance of unity between bhikkhus and laypeople in protecting religion, culture, and national freedom.
