The History of Education in Ancient India: c. 3000 BC to AD 1192

The book begins from the proposition that education in ancient India cannot be studied independently of religion. Among the Vedic Aryans, learning emerged as an integral part of religious life, with the Ṛgveda serving as both a sacred text and an early source of educational ideals. The pursuit of knowledge was ultimately directed toward understanding life, death, the self, Brahman, karma, rebirth, and liberation. The pedagogical process included listening to the teacher, reflection, meditation, disciplined residence with the guru, and the transmission of professional knowledge through apprenticeship. Ghosh also places educational development within its changing historical environment. The formation of schools and disciplines accompanied the growth of political institutions, social classes, religious movements, and systems of royal patronage. Buddhism introduced new monastic centres of learning that existed alongside Brahmanical institutions, while political instability and invasions repeatedly affected their continuity. By dividing the long historical period into distinct educational ages, the author seeks to demonstrate both continuity and change in the creation, preservation, and transmission of ancient Indian knowledge.
