Introduction

The book begins with the doctrinal background necessary to understand Nepalese Buddhist imagery, especially the distinction between Sūtra and Vajrayāna traditions and the importance of bodhicitta, guru lineage, tantric commitments, and the two stages of Vajrayāna practice. It then presents the Trikāya framework as the organizing principle for Buddhist representation, beginning with Dharmakāya symbolism and moving through Sambhogakāya Buddhas such as Vajradhara, Vajrasattva, Vairocana, Akṣobhya, Ratnasambhava, Amitābha, Amoghasiddhi, Medicine Buddha, and Amitāyus. The Nirmāṇakāya section introduces historical and past Buddhas, including Dīpaṃkara and Śākyamuni. Subsequent chapters cover major gurus such as Nāgārjuna, Padmasambhava, Nāropa, Atiśa, Marpa, Milarepa, Tsongkhapa, and Sakya Paṇḍita, followed by the great Bodhisattvas, including Samantabhadra, Kṣitigarbha, Ākāśagarbha, Vajrapāṇi, Mañjuśrī, and Maitreya. The book also gives substantial attention to Avalokiteśvara and his various forms, Mañjuśrī and his manifestations, Tārā and her forms, the female wisdom consorts of the Five Buddhas, tantric deities such as Kālacakra, Hevajra, Cakrasaṃvara, and Vajrayoginī, as well as protectors, directional guardians, and local guardian deities. Through this structure, the work serves as a systematic guide to the theological, ritual, and artistic dimensions of Nepalese Buddhist iconography.
